How did We Go High Productions come to life?

Tom Hanks shared in an interview recently that to excel (and be remembered, hi Tom!) in the world of filmmaking one must contribute to the process of problem solving. My 25 years of curating and producing events (now via Shortlist Agency), offered me the chance to master that role and provide that service to clients over and over again.

Combining that skill set, my deep trust in my communication and leadership abilities along with my personal desire to tell stories, naturally lead me to offer my clients motion picture and auditory production services. An expansion of my stable of brands that I am very proud of.

What is it about motion pictures and auditory art that excites you?

For me, film is one of the most exquisite ways to artistically examine the human condition. And since film takes humans to make it, bring it to life, share it with the world and experience it. I am essentially able to immerse myself in the depths of the human experience even more so by default of being part of the filmmaking process. Whether that be in front or behind the camera.

As a student of the Universe and its fascinating enchantments, I found mixing my metaphysical learnings with the intricacies of humans, their desires, foibles, passions and stories somehow created something magical, or a sense of cosmic energy infiltrated the standard process of making a film. Something that brought about synchronicities, performances that came off the page, opportunities that dropped in our laps and a camaraderie amongst the cast and crew that moved mountains.

Time and time again, we came away from the production as different humans. Having learnt something profound about the creative process itself, or having observed an invisible sense of spirit participating in our success or simply witnessing a performance that allowed us to understand ourselves a little better. This among other things kept bringing me back to the world of facilitating stories through motion pictures and auditory art.

How is We Go High Productions different?

To function smoothly, it’s been said that a film set runs a bit like a military operation. Everyone has a role, there is a chain of command and communication channels are best when open and to the point. Yet, we all know that high pressure environments can often attract energies and behavior that can derail flow and efficiency.

One of the reasons I left BBC America in 2015 and launched my creative event and production company, Shortlist Agency, was because I believed that bringing events to life didn’t need to be stressful or nasty. So with that ethos in mind, at WGHP, we strive to offer unconditional presence, deep listening and cognitive awareness in order to create a transformative environment that is not only safe for each participant to own their role, share their talent and speak their voice, it is also a foundation for the exchange of radical truth. Truth cuts through the ego. Without ego we stay in flow and on budget!. Simply, we see it as fostering a working environment that models military precision, a healthy chain of communication but also allows space for our unique talents to be activated and enjoyed.

How do you develop a team that nurtures an egoless collaborative culture?

Firstly, identifying that the arena we wish to work & play in is one of truth and cosmic collaboration. Calling out these principles as “things we do” naturally attracts those who resonate with this style of working. They know they have a home with us.

Secondly, walking the talk. As the leader of the company, and often the projects themselves, I have a responsibility to bring my full self each and every day. Being accountable, engaged, connected, not to mention kind, curious and open, is paramount to ensure we are individually and collectively nurturing the culture to bring about joyful experiences at every stage of the project life cycle.

And lastly, preparation. Being able to identify and plan for the micro and macro elements of any project in an exquisitely thorough way ensures that we experience less bumps in the road and by default less opportunities for the ego to show up and take us away from the truth of the moment.

Tell us about the experience of making your first film Meeting Mr. Oscar?

People are nuanced. Stories are nuanced. Driven by a deep passion to tell stories about people and their nuances, Meeting Mr. Oscar almost wrote itself.

Born out of a delicious mix of my own life experiences, some travel stories and those of my producing partner Jeongwon Lee's,. We both had this deep belief that the story needed to be told and with that, the cosmic collaboration kicked in. As we began to work on the script, we noticed and then actively followed these tiny signs and or breadcrumbs that started appearing in front of us. Step by step, the location, casting, props and set car literally fell in our laps. We went from starting the script to being on set in only a few months.

We also engaged a female-led crew, another part of how we do things differently at WGHP, which we knew would add breadth and depth to the on-set experience and in turn translate to the screen. The entire process from start to finish was so fun and I learned a lot. I can’t wait to do it again.

WE ARE STORYTELLER’S COMMITTED TO REIMAGINING

THE BREAD & DEPTH OF SHOWCASING

TRUTH, BEAUTY & HUMAN CONNECTION THROUGH OUR COLLECTIVE LENS

& UNCONDITIONALLY SHARING THAT PERSPECTIVE WITH THE WORLD.
